The first performance by the Oratorio Society of J.S. Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion” was on Good Friday, March 29, 1929—the 200th anniversary of the very first performance at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig with Bach himself conducting. Dr. Hagbard Brase, a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Stockholm, instituted the tradition which carries on to this day.
In addition to the music of Handel and Bach during Holy Week, the Midwest Art Exhibition is hosted by the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery. The exhibition features works by regional artists as well as works from the permanent collection. The founders of this exhibition in 1899 were Carl Gustafson Lotave, G.N. Malm, and Sandzén. Search for the Wild Dala
Lindsborg has created the nation’s only herd of Wild Dala Horses. What is a Dala horse? Its perhaps Sweden’s best known icon, a bluntly rounded, tail-free horse that is thought to have been first whittled out of wood by the fire during long cold Scandinavian nights. In recent years, Lindsborg adopted the Dala symbol of Swedish folk craft as a symbol of identity and welcome. Here you’ll see traditional Dala horses on front porches, on coffee mugs and even on the side of police cruisers.
In 2000, Lindsborg Decided to cast the traditional Dala shape in large fiberglass forms – an idea patterned after Chicago’s cows on Michigan avenue. Local people and folks with Lindsborg connections sponsor each Wild Dala. Each is unconventionally decorated by one on the towns many local artists. Each new horse is feted in a public unveiling party complete with street theater and parody songs sung by the crowd. On many Saturdays during good weather, open-air tours of the Wild Dala Horses are available. Plus, new Wild Dalas are still being rounded up.
